The Mindfullness Movement
Mindfulness can be described as paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, without judgement. It has always been at the heart of Buddhist practice – and indeed of all contemplative traditions in different forms.

This film follows the children in a Preschool in Denmark, who will attend school next year. The teachers have the last three years, worked structured with presence, slowness and immersion. The children get during the day breaks doing breathing exercises or artistic work. The Teachers can see that it helps the children to calm down. Presence and immersion does not come by itself in an institution -- it requires conscious work of teachers. The Mindfullness Movement is largely attributable to the work of Jon Kabat-Zinn, who in the 1970s saw the possibility of making the essence of Buddhist meditation practices available to anyone and everyone, without reference to spiritual or religious beliefs. |

HEALTHY HABITS OF MIND from Persona Film on Vimeo. m HTML |
This film shows how kindergartners in Oxford Elementary School in Berkeley, San Francisco are introduced to mindfulness in school. They practice mindful listening, mindful eating, mindful movement and yoga. Mindfulness is a way of being and one of the benefits is that it teaches how to pay attention. As a kindergartner your attention is required in order to learn how to read and write - often in an environment with a lot of external stimuli. Starting early with practicing these healthy habits of mind is a very good idea. Like learning to play an instrument it is much easier early on in life than later on in life. |
